In today’s competitive telecommunications landscape, agility in pricing and product management can make or break a service provider's market position. As telecom operators seek to modernise their BSS infrastructure, migrating from legacy pricing systems to Oracle’s Pricing Design Centre (PDC) has become a strategic imperative. However, this migration requires careful planning, systematic execution, and a deep understanding of both source and target systems. This blog outlines the essential phases, strategies, and best practices to ensure a successful pricing migration to Oracle PDC, minimising risks and maximising the benefits of this powerful platform.
The Oracle Communications Pricing Design Centre (PDC) is a web-based application for rapid design and deployment of product offerings, supporting the full spectrum of pricing capabilities of the underlying charging and rating solutions.
With its business-driven workflows to create and manage product offerings, Pricing Design Centre enables the communications service provider to create new offers and promotions in minutes, a key element of success in an increasingly demanding and competitive market.
Pricing migration is also the same as any other data migration: Extract Pricing data from the OBRM database, transform it into the target system’s data model, and load the extracted data to the PDC database.
The pricing migration process can be categorised into the following phases:
Data Analysis: In this phase, the pricing data from the OBRM database is extracted and analysed for any errors in existing pricing configurations or errors due to data model changes in the pricing design centre. The errors found in this phase need to be fixed to proceed to the next phase. Analysis reports are analysed, respective configuration changes are made in OBRM before restarting the migration process.

Data Migration: In this phase, the pricing data from the OBRM database is extracted, transformed, and enriched to the PDC data model and then loaded into the PDC database.
Migration Overview
The pricing migration follows a bottom-up approach where configuration objects are migrated first, followed by pricing objects. Configuration objects include metadata and setup data.
The following are the pricing object categories:
Migrating pricing data to Oracle PDC is a complex but rewarding undertaking that demands meticulous planning, thorough data analysis, and systematic execution. By following the phased approach outlined above—from initial data analysis through migration to testing—telecommunications service providers can successfully transition to a more agile, business-driven pricing platform. The key to success lies in identifying gaps early, cleaning up legacy data, and leveraging Oracle's migration utilities effectively.
